Hand Made Intaglio Maltese Cross in Black Onyx. Intaglio jewelry refers to incised (negative) image-making, and is the opposite of cameo. It encompasses engraving and etching. Glyptic art, or the art of sculpting in precious stone, dates back to the 7th millennium B.C. In ancient societies, gems engraved as seal stones and personal signets were not only ornamental adornments, but also were objects of indispensable utility, which, impressed into wax or clay, represented a legal signature or personal identification on business or bureaucratic transactions. This ring is entirely engraved by hand and set in sterling silver and made in the United States by one of the finest artisans in the world. This Bulgarian gem engraver uses the same two millennia old techniques the Ancient Romans used. The four arms of the Cross represent the four Cardinal Virtues – Prudence, Temperance, Justice and Fortitude. Not sure what the sizes are but I estimate 7 and 8. They can be resized by most jewelers. Truly one of kind.
